Red gram/Vanpayar thoran

Ingredients

  • Red gram - 1 cup
  • Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2tsp
  • Red chilly powder - 1tsp
  • Garlic - 2 flakes
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil - 1tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1tsp
  • Dry red chilly - 2 nos
  • Shallots - 4 thickly chopped
  • Curry leaves

Method of preparation

  • wash and soak the red gram for overnight.
  • pressure cook the red gram with enough salt and water.cook till 4 - 5 whistles.
  • Gring the grated coconut with turmeric ,red chilly,garlic,cumin seeds and salt.do not use water to grind the coconut,make half grinded.
  • Heat oil in a pan,splutter mustard seeds,add sliced shllots,dry red chilly,curry leaves saute till it becomes golden brown.
  • Next drain the water and add cooked red gram in the pan,add grinded coconut,mix well then close the lid and cook for 3 - 4 min on medium low flame.
  • Remove the lid mix the gram well and let it dry on low flame.stop the flame when it becomes dry.
  • Vanpayar thoran is ready.
